Awakening into 2018 with GYROKINESIS®

Today was the last class I taught GYROKINESIS® in the year 2017. I am grateful to have developed as an Apprentice Trainer at the Elements Wellness & Fitness Center. I've had the privilege of teaching enthusiastic participants, learning from the other GYROTONIC®, Pilates and Fitness Trainers with years of teaching experience under their belts.                   I'm grateful to have had such a supportive and optimistic boss who is eager to see me grow and thrive as a member of the community. I've grown over the course of six months in preparation to part III of my certification and onto the final stage as a Certified GYROKINESIS® Instructor. I am looking forward to a Promising Future as a Movement Practitioner in 2018 and in my efforts to make difference in the lives of many who are in need of wellness support and guidance. I concluded my day at the Elements Center with a private session on the GYROTONER , a specialized machine that's used to expa

Spreading the WORD

GYROKINESIS® is making its way around the community, my goal as movement practitioner- to spread the wealth of knowledge in this technique in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area is becoming more of a reality. Saturday November 18th, GYROKINESIS® made an appearance at the Redeemed Christian Church of God Health Fair. Although it was a chilly day, there were various sponsors and vendors offering their free services: health, dental and vision screenings outdoors to the congregation and community participants. Many of those passing by inquired about GYROKINESIS® with issues concerning areas like their back, neck, shoulders and knees - simply sat in a chair and begin to move. At first, there were reservations because of the chilliness but they soon found that surprisingly moving through the various sequence of exercises began to warm their bodies and steer their focus away from the elements. Participants were guided with verbal and neural cues while honing in on the breath and bri

The Very Last Days of the First Colored Circus

Phenomenal. Stupendous. Superb. Magical. Spectacular. Captivating. These are just a few words to describe the impression that RESTORATION STAGE INC. cast of "The Very Last Days of the The Fist Colored Circus" left on it's audience members. Tonight was my first time in the Anacostia Playhouse Blackbox Theater Space. I sat on the front row, stage left next one of the play's lead role character's, Ollie , back when the play first ran. That explains his contemplative manner, focus and attention to detail and appropriate break-in moments to acknowledge the talent that was before. And indeed, we were sitting in the presence of stars. The play is a enactment of the life and times of being Colored Circus life in the early 19th Century. The script by Steven A. Butler was witty, humorous and historically riveting as we entered into the world as it was back then. You felt the anguish, the joy, the wonder of it all whether in laughter or in tears... Each moment of the

Cornbread for Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

I recently had the pleasure of visiting my Grandmother in her small hometown, Wilson NC. Quaint and Sweet the town is, the history tells of the chilling stories reality of Segregation during the Jim Crow era and yet in this day in age the neighbors are a mix of Black and White. Downtown Wilson is comprised of a few streets where a cafe, a theater, retail stores and such lay on the corners. Dance Studio B holds a special place in my heart, it's where I and a few visiting young cousins put on an exclusive performance for my Great-Grandmother Addie Hoskins before her passing. The Matriarch of the Family since 1924, she is who the family went down south to see. We spent summer days on her porch or out back. The young women, in the kitchen making biscuits... The children chasing each other around the front yard or swinging from the Family tree... The young men strolling or fixing cars, planning moves for the evening. Wilson was quiet, gentle but rough--like kicking rocks wi

at Elements Wellness Center

Introduction to GYROKINESIS® Workshop  held at the Elements Center Wellness & Fitness in Glover Park, Washington DC. It was a first for  BeeBodi©  Founder, Kayla Harley as an Apprentice Instructor. The evening brought a numbers in those who were finishing off a work week in the heart of the city, freelancers, retirees and other fitness/wellness enthusiasts. A total of 6 participants. Each class participant came in with different needs that catered to their lifestyle and day-to-day activities. Rose, a retired senior and golfer had a "swayed back" from overuse of rotation in the lumbar spine with accompanying inward rotated knees. As she began to become more familiar with the concepts of  GYROKINESIS®  *lengthening energetically, by the activating the fifth line from the soles of the feet, thru the body, up and out of the top of the head* habits in her body began to change subtly, simply by bringing awareness to them. There were two participants wh

The Tale of Two Feet: The Art of Travel

The Tale of Two Feet follows the journey of an Artist, who is willing to take risks to sustain a vision that has been set before her.  It is a story, one of adventure, intrigue, devastation, insight and humanity. This story is narrated by the Artist who have found glory in her walk through life time and time again. It celebrates the empowering reality of the journey traveled alone. Whether by foot, by car, by train, by plane, by bus, or by way of another human being--she carries herself across lands, worlds, dimensions even full of wonder and promise.  I often hear the question "When are you going to buy a car?" It has not crossed my mind to purchase a vehicle although I am a licensed driver in two states. I don't think drivers like me on the road much. I tend to cruise, taking in the sights and sounds as I go. I don't race to red lights like most people and I'm never in a hurry to find the perfect parking space.  Drivers must wonder, "Well, wh

Fifth Line Assignment

I've recovered one of my college papers during the first semester of encountering GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®... The fifth line is an essential feeling to be aware of during [Ballet] class. This feeling opposition can be discovered during certain combination during the barre. For me finding the fifth line is most clearly felt during relevés and required balancing on one or two feet. In the process of rising to both feet, I would engage my center immediately while naturally discovering the feeling opposition with the space above and below me. That same opposing energy is required to lower both feet back onto the surface-the upper body grows taller and expands upward as the heels return. The feeling of the fifth line can also be discovered when weight is transferred from one foot to another during a balance because the sense of reaching down and out through the toes is necessary to successfully remain suspended. The opposite side of the body reachers up and out depending on the p

Nefertiti Walks

I am overwhelmed by the enthusiasm, the feedback and the residual response to my One-Woman Show: Nefertiti Walks which premiered in the 2016 Art All Night DC Festival Sept 24. It was a 23 minute long performance, a timeline of Nefertiti as an Ancient Queen traveling to various places throughout the Globe. As, I recall the events leading up to my performance I can say that I found myself dreaming one day and one-woman tour of the world as a solo performance artist. I've been inspired by Nejla Yatkin, a Turkish native woman who shares dancing with the world and has set a number of works on professional dance companies. My encounter with her work "What Dreams May Come" first in Chicago and again in Washington DC at Dance Place gave me an idea of where I could begin. From this piece, I was given the permission to as an artist to create the environment for which my story could come alive: set, props, lighting, and costuming. I concluded the performance by asking the audie
